Mahabharata : As we know it....
Hi All,
Today is a new day and so is our topic. 'Mahabharata', about which we are going to discuss today, could be compared to a myth as there do not exist any written records of this epic and everything which one could co-relate with the massive data obtained by our high-tech instruments and provide shreds of evidence on Mahabharata is nothing but a fable or ' दंतकथा ' which literally translates to a story passed on from tongue to tongue over the generations.
As the story goes Maharishi Ved Vyasa was in search of a scribe fit of putting down the (to be) revered text which would later be known as Mahabharata. On his hunt, he reached the abode of Lord Shiva, Mt. Kailash. There, on hearing Vyasa's condition, He recommended his own son Ganesha for the task at hand. As the Lord himself had recommended a scribe, Vyasa readily accepted.
After all the resources required for imprinting this Epic were brought together, Lord Ganesha put forth a condition for Ved Vyasa. He said that the Maharishi would have to keep up with his oration of the Epic until it had come to an end, failing which Ganesha would stop his writing at the same instant at which Vyasa Rishi would pause for taking a breath. By this, he wanted to ensure what Vyasa did not put forth the Epic which would be adulterated by human prejudice.
Not the one to be outwitted so easily, Maharishi Vyasa also put forth a condition by which Lord Ganesha would have to take an oath according to which he would not put down a single word in writing unless and until he understood what it meant. By this, he intended to put in a difficult word in his oration and keeping his promise, Ganesha would have to wait and think about the meaning of the said word which would be enough for the learned Maharishi to take a break.
Ganesha readily agreed and so the work began. However, what the Maharishi did not know was that Ganesha was equally learned, intelligent, and could easily outdo even the most learned of all men. So, the task proved out to be quite exhausting for the Maharishi, however, not the one to break a promise the Maharishi somehow managed to fulfill his promise and thus, came into writing one of the best texts of all time - The Jaya or 'The Tale of Victory'.
This is where the story each child hears from his grandparents or parents ends; but does it end there...
... to be continued.
