Mahabharata : The Princesses of Kashi
Hi All,
After a rather busy week, I have taken out time to write a new post for you all, sincerely hope you enjoy it. So, here goes...
In our recent posts, we talked about the sacrifice of Devratha (Yayati Complex) earning him the title of Bhishma. Continuing forward, we all know of Satyavati's stern aggression for being the mother of a great, undefeatable line of kings. And soon enough Shantanu passed away leaving his kingdom in the hands of Satyavati and her sons under the guidance and protection of Bhishma.
However, Satyavati's ambition and over-confidence on her progeny proved out to be misplaced and fatal. She had two sons, Chitrangada and Vichitravirya. Of them, Chitangada was stronger while Vichitravirya was a mere weakling. However, as destiny had it, the impudent Chitrangada soon met his end at the hands of a Gandharva over a quarrel because both had the same names.
This left the entire kingdom under the supremacy of Vichitravirya. However, it was commonly known as well as accepted that Vichitravirya was incapable to even be a soldier, forget about being addressed as 'His Highness'. Satyavati, being unable to defend her son in front of the whole world, asked Bhishma to do her a last favor of successfully fulfilling the marital rites of Vichitravirya, who being a weakling could not find a wife for himself. Bhishma promised her that he would fulfill her wish, however, after that he could not be of much help. Retreating from a thanking Satyavati, he left for the Swayamvara of the three princesses of Kashi. The king of Kashi had organized a swayamvara for his three daughters, however, he had avoided inviting Hastinapura. it was rumored that this was to get back to Bhishma, who in declaring celibacy had ignored the fate of the sister of the present king. But, the common word was that this was because Vichitravirya was an incapable groom for any woman.
Considering this as an affront insult of the Hastinapura household, Bhishma rode into Kashi and using his mighty power abducted the three princesses- Amba, Ambika, Ambalika, and gave them to his younger cousin. Soon on reaching Hastinapura, Amba disclosed her love for Shalva and asked him to let her go. Bhishma agreed and let go of Amba. However, on reaching Shalva's kingdom, Shalva refused to accept something given away as charity to be the queen of his empire. So, having no other resort, Amba returned to Hastinapura, where the weakling of Vichitravirya said, in a quite imperious tone that something that had been given away could not be taken back. Unable to digest her own plight, she turned to Bhishma demanding justice. She said in sobbing words that such a pitiful stage befell her because of his arrogance. Also, since he had brought her to Hastinapura in his own carriage, it was he who was her rightful husband and not his cousin. Bhishma waved off her demands saying that he had taken an oath of celibacy which he could not forsake. This left Amba seething with rage who departed on a mission to search someone capable of making Bhishma fall at her feet as all kings of Aryavarta feared Bhishma and would dare not seek justice for a stranger at the stake of their kingdom. Her search eventually led her to Parashurama, the Guru of Bhishma...
