Mahabharata : The Legitimate Children of the Illegitimate Son

Hi All,

Man, it's good to be back. First of all my apologies to all my readers for my inconsistency in the recent posts. Honestly, I have been quite busy, learning some new stuff, but I'll try and make it up for you guys in this post and the further ones...
So let's get started...

Moving on from the wrath of Amba(Shikandini) which would prove to be a gamechanger in the final war, we fast forward time to the point where Vichitravirya, the husband of Ambika and Ambalika, dies an unexpected death during his coronation ceremony, but more importantly, without leaving any heirs to the throne of Hastinapura.

At that time, it was rumored that a furious Bhishma, had threatened to release the Brahmastra on Surya, the Sun God himself...warning the Gods that he would bring the darkness upon the whole world that was constantly being brought down upon his kingdom, courtesy of these Gods.

As the Gods reasoned about Dharma and Karma with an unconsolable Bhishma, he apologetically withdrew from the Gods. But along with Bhishma, another person who was tremendously shook was Satyavati whose dream of being a mother of a great dynasty of Kings had come down shattering in its adolescence itself. In great haste to secure her goal, she sends for Vyasa.

Maharishi Krishna Dvaipayana

Talking about Vyasa or Ved Vyasa as he was known, Vyasa was simply a title awarded to him where Vyasa in Sanskrit literally translates to 'Compiler' because of his compilations of the Vedas, Puranas, and more importantly the Epic of Mahabharata without which we would not have known who were Pandavas, Kauravas, or almost anyone of the era.
However, his real name was Krishna Dvaipayana, because he was born on an island which in Sanskrit is proclaimed as 'dvip', thus Dvaipayana.

Now, the reason for Vyasa's summoning was based on an ancient law named 'Niyoga'. According to this, a man can be a father even if he happens to be sterile or has passed away if the wife conceives a child from another man. So, being the firstborn of Satyavati, superfetated by Sage Parasara, he was ordered by Satyavati to inseminate the two wives of Vichitravirya. But in her haste, Satyavati overlooks Vyasa's external appearance after his long life under observance of severe penance. This fact though affected both the wives of Vichitravirya. Ambika, the elder one closed her eyes, thus the child she had turned out to be blind, Dhritarashtra. As for Ambalika, she turned pale, which resulted in a pale and weakling of a child, Pandu.

Lets just take a quick break here, and continue in the further posts about someone you might know as Vidura. But, an important thing that mostly goes unnoticed here, are the frailties of human laws that try to correct what nature has ordained by it's own will. But at the same time, a critical view might suggest that then it was Nature herself who willed the birth of children by Niyoga, atleast for those of the era of the time...
Do let me know your feelings on the same or even any unique perspective suggested by you....
