Mahabharata : The Unknown Version
Hi All,
Then, whatever little we know about this Epic, how did we come to know about it? This is what the bedtime stories do not tell us. As a matter of fact, Maharishi Vyasa and Lord Ganesha were not the only witnesses to the recital of the Text. A disciple by the name Vaisampayana was also present at the time. He further narrated the text to Janamejaya, grandson of Arjuna, and son of Parikshit as well as Romaharshana. This went on till the tale was heard by Jaimini till when it had turned into a fable. And, at long last, whatever little remained available of the Epic was put down by Jaimini who was the first to bring forth the text in a written form after Lord Ganesha himself.
The list of Narrators and Listeners goes as follows :
Narrator | Listener
Vyasa | Ganesha, Vaisampayana, Suka
Vaisampayana | Janamejaya, Romaharshana
Romaharshana | Ugrashrava
Suka | Parikshit
Four birds | Jaimini
Thus came into existence the Mahabharata that we know which represents only a single part out of sixty of the Great Epic of Jaya put down by Ganesha orated by Maharishi Vyasa.....

A new day and a new post...
Last time we hit a quick recap on what do our bedtime stories about Mahabharata tell us and what all do they miss out. This post is a continuation of that part in which we would discuss what all is missing and incorrect from these stories.
Our historic tales of The 105 Brothers though correct is not the whole tale. It is believed that the Text on its completion was celebrated throughout the Subcontinent and gained recognition and praise by the Gods themselves. However, unable to bear the jealousy, some say that Lord of Rain and Thunder - Indra, stole the Text and hid it somewhere unknown and out of reach of mankind.

Actually as said in Jaya by Devdutta Pattanaik , Janamejaya heard the Mahabharata by Astika during the snake sacrifice....Still facts are facts ......Well written....
ReplyDeleteAs a matter of fact, Astika simply retold him about his ancestral history and got to know some new facts about them in order to stop the massacre.
DeleteAlso, Devdutta Pattanaik has himself presented it in the table mentioned by him in Jaya, before the Prologue... but then again "There is your truth and there is mine truth. As for the universal truth, it does not exist."
Thank you for your compliment.
